Bringing Ancestors to the Table

Bringing Ancestors to the table:

Don’t we all have that one recipe we make that brings our ancestors to mind. I have two the Granny Goodwin Cookie and the Brown Sugar Pound Cake. When I think of these two recipes and where they came from I think of Stokesdale, Walnut Cove, Madison and North Greensboro. My Mother’s family are from this area. When I was six I stayed with each of my Great Aunts and Uncles with my Grandmother. During this time I learned how great my Grandmother and her brothers and sisters were. Recycle what you can use for something else like a clorax jug made into a pocketbook, smooth rocks painted with a flower, use old newspaper to make a pattern for clothing. Watching Uncle JD calling in the piglets and all of his pumpkins. Me a six years old teaching my Aunt Pauleen how to clean a canteloupe. Aunt Gladys with all of her salt and pepper collection (Now I collect cake stands and cookie jars).

So when I make these two recipes all of these ancestors come to my table (memory) and I hope I make them proud .
